Hertford College Library Project Reaches Major Milestones
The transformation of Hertford College's library and archive facilities has reached a series of significant milestones, marking an important stage in this ambitious project to create a unified, accessible and future-focused academic resource within one of Oxford's most historic settings.
Designed by MICA and delivered in collaboration with Beard Construction, Oxford Archaeology and AKT II, the project combines sensitive conservation of listed buildings with the creation of new library and archive facilities that will support generations of students and researchers.
Uncovering Hertford's Hidden History
A major phase of archaeological investigations has now been completed by Oxford Archaeology across the site, including extensive works within Old Buildings Quad and beneath the Old Chapel.
The excavations revealed a remarkable collection of artefacts that offer valuable insights into centuries of activity at the College. Finds included animal bone combs, metal buckles, drinking vessels, tableware, lawn bowls and a variety of everyday objects, helping to build a richer understanding of the site's medieval and post-medieval past.
The archaeological programme formed a key part of the early works and was carefully integrated into the live construction programme, ensuring detailed investigation could take place while maintaining progress on site.
Construction Progresses Below Ground
With excavation works now complete, construction of the new library extension has moved into its next phase.
The new basement extension forms a central component of the wider redevelopment, creating additional library and archive accommodation while connecting historic and contemporary spaces into a cohesive whole. The project will bring together collections currently spread across different locations, improving accessibility and providing facilities fit for the next century of academic life.
Working closely with structural engineers AKT II, the team has begun preparing the excavated areas for construction. Works now focus on the formation of the new spaces, alongside the careful cleaning, repair and conservation of existing historic stone walls uncovered during the excavation process.
This milestone represents a significant step towards realising a highly integrated library environment that respects Hertford's historic character while responding to modern academic requirements.
Restoring the West Range
Alongside the new extension, substantial refurbishment works continue within the Grade II* listed West Range buildings.
The restoration strategy focuses on preserving the historic fabric of the buildings while delivering improved accessibility, safety and environmental performance. Works include the upgrading and repair of historic windows, the introduction of carefully integrated fire-rated interventions, and the installation of a new lift to provide inclusive access throughout the facility.
One of the most exciting elements of the refurbishment is the transformation of the upper-floor spaces into characterful reading rooms that celebrate the building's architectural heritage. As the internal works progress, these rooms are beginning to reveal their future atmosphere, offering students exceptional study environments with views across Radcliffe Square and Oxford's historic city centre.
